Ice and Water Shield

What is ice and water shield?

Unlike standard paper or synthetic underlayment, Owens Corning WeatherLock® is a peel-and-stick membrane specifically engineered to create a watertight seal.

How is it made?

It is made of polymer-modified asphalt (rubberized asphalt). This makes it thick, flexible, and extremely sticky.  The Interior is reinforced with a fiberglass mat to prevent it from tearing or stretching during installation. Because of its rubberized asphalt composition, the material "grabs" any nail driven through it. It forms a gasket-like seal around the shank of the nail, ensuring that even if water gets under your shingles, it cannot seep through the nail holes into your wood deck.

Why does a homeowner need it?

Standard shingles are "water-shedding," meaning they work by overlapping to let gravity carry water away. They are not, however, "waterproof." There are three main scenarios where shingles fail, and WeatherLock® saves the day:

Ice Dams: In winter, snow melts on the upper part of the roof and refreezes at the cold eaves (edges). This creates a "dam" of ice that traps liquid water behind it. That trapped water has nowhere to go but up and under your shingles. Without a shield, that water soaks directly into your plywood and ceiling.

Wind-Driven Rain: During severe storms, high winds can actually lift shingle tabs or blow rain horizontally underneath them. The ice and water shield acts as a secondary barrier that stays dry even if shingles are compromised.

Vulnerable Points (Valleys and Penetrations): Valleys carry the highest volume of water on a roof. We also use this material around chimneys, skylights, and vents because these "cuts" in your roof are the most common leak points.
